The first step is to add a firewall to your computer. This is a simple software program that acts as the first line of defense that you have. The firewall is in place to prevent viruses and hackers from getting into the computer and nosing around.

This is not a guaranteed protection though. While the firewalls are getting more complicated so are the hackers and viruses.

Anti-Virus
Having a good anti-virus program installed on your computer is a very good idea. This will prevent any issues that can pop up. The anti-virus is not actually going to be able to block all of the attacks but you will have the virus cleaner there to prevent the damage from being done.

This will mean that you are further protecting yourself from those that seek to do harm.

Avoid Downloads
Another valuable bit of information is avoiding downloads from sources that you do not know. There are many places on the internet that are just not safe. If you are not familiar with the website then it is best to not download something that they are offering.

This goes for those companies that are trying to download as soon as you hit the site. This can be a virus ridden program.
